For the past several months, we’ve been researching and brainstorming ways to expand our human trafficking awareness project. These efforts led us to the conclusion that while combatting this epidemic in our city is crucial, we cannot ignore the multinational aspect of human trafficking. In other words, the trafficking that is occurring in cities, states, and nations around us directly impacts us.
In order to get a better understanding of human trafficking in our global community, we’ve decided to start partnering with some organizations in Tijuana, Mexico. The US/Mexico border is known to be the busiest border crossing in the world and with that a hub for human trafficking.
To gain some knowledge and first-hand experience with human trafficking in this community, our Project Manager, Brianna Chaves, will be staying in Tijuana for a month! She will be interning with a wonderful, bi-national non-profit organization called International Network of Hearts. Not only do they offer victim services, they are also deeply involved with increasing awareness by offering education programs to their community.
She will be working with one of their safe houses for minors who are victims of trafficking and sexual violence called La Casa Del Jardín (Garden House). Brianna is very excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to share her heart with the community in Tijuana.
